Ed Walters
I've spent my career at the seam between law and software, mostly trying to make legal information cheaper, faster, and more open.
I'm Vice President of Legal Innovation and Strategy at Clio, where I work on how artificial intelligence changes the practice of law — and on what legal professionals will need in order to stay indispensable as it does.
I got here by way of Fastcase, the legal research company I founded in 1999 and led as CEO for twenty-four years. The premise was straightforward: the law belongs to the people it governs, and reading it shouldn't require an expensive subscription. Fastcase merged with the Spanish legal research company vLex in March 2023, where I served as Chief Strategy Officer and on the board. In 2025, Clio acquired vLex for $1 billion — the largest deal in the history of legal technology — bringing together what is, by document count, the largest legal database ever assembled.
Alongside the companies, I teach. I've been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center since 2014 and a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School since 2025, and I taught at Cornell Law School and Cornell Tech from 2018 to 2024. My courses tend to arrive a few years before the case law does: The Law of Robots, The Law of Autonomous Vehicles, and more recently GenAI and BigLaw and Generative AI in Legal Practice.
I write and speak about the same set of problems from a few directions — legal analytics, the ethics of automated legal work, and the long argument that public law should be public. I hold nine U.S. patents in legal technology, edited Data-Driven Law for Taylor & Francis, and founded RAIL: The Journal of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & Law. I've served on the boards of Public.Resource.org, Pro Bono Net, and Télécoms Sans Frontières, among others.
Before any of that, I was an associate at Covington & Burling in Washington and Brussels, a law clerk to the Honorable Emilio M. Garza on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and — earlier still, and more formative than it probably should have been — a writer in the White House Office of Presidential Speechwriting.
